Keeping SafeDid you know you can reduce and minimize the amount of spam you receive in your inbox. Below are 5 of the top tips to keep the spam away.

  1. Keep it Hush Hush - Spam has a much harder time getting to you if no one knows your e-mail address. So, the 1st tip is to be careful where you publish it. Don't sign up for newsletters or other risky services.
  2. Have a High Risk Box - Most Americans have one primary e-mail address that they use for everything. Since e-mail accounts are free, consider setting up a special one for newsletters or new member registrations on blogs etc... That way the those important e-mails never get lost in the riff raff.
  3. Use a Temporary Address - There are services that give you a free anonymous e-mail address. Such a service is mailinator. This free service allows you to make up any e-mail address @mailinator then check it for free. Then what? Nothing, you forget it. For example, let's say I want to receive an e-mail to sign up for a contest. I simply make up an e-mail address ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ). I type in the fake e-mail into Mailinator's website and Voila, there's the e-mail I've been waiting for and I have no new spam in my in box. Wouldn't it be nice to have suck a service for your personal phone number?
  4. Use The Spam filtering function on your software - Nearly all modern e-mail programs have a spam filter. If one particularly clever spam message makes it through, be sure to mark it as spam. These programs often learn from your feedback and use complex methods to prevent that particular type of spam from slipping though.
  5. Get a Gmal or AOL Account - The engineers at gmail and AOL have made tremendous strides against spam. Most services only look at a given individual's e-mail account but these services combine all of it's users feedback to identify spam. Therefore, if several users mark a particular piece of mail as spam it is moved from your inbox to your spam box. This method is amazingly accurate.
